42245 & 42070 – 18:03 & 18:37 Wednesday 1st October

42245 & 42070

Just when you thought you had all the possible excitement that the Carriage Capture could possibly deliver, along comes a journey that fair takes your breath away……or maybe not, but at least “something” happened today.

Firstly though, it was a very mundane 18:03 Penzance service that took me from Paddington to Reading in Carriage E, aka 42245. The only thing of note here was another arm rest-hogger who compounded his oafishness by playing Candy Crush for the whole journey like some sulky adolescent Kevin.

Pouting lips when all you can’t do is line up three cherries isn’t a good look mate.

I then changed at Reading for my regular late Frome service and plonked myself down in a very innocent looking Carriage D, aka 42070.

It was just when we left Theale that I heard raised voices in the vestibule and from the bits of conversation I could pick up it seemed that the Train Manager was having a go at a passenger who had tried to leave at Theale but had found that the doors were already locked.

“Well I ain’t paying for a ticket to Thatcham then” said the failed disembarkee to which the TM retorted with some excuse about having already given the signal to the driver to leave.

But obviously this got the TM’s goat somewhat riled as he then stomped into our carriage and demanded to see all tickets. (And it was a “demand” there wasn’t any “asking” about it.)

Now this is very strange. I get my ticket checked every day, usually in the mornings just when I’ve fallen asleep but I’ve never seen a ticket check be carried out 3 minutes from Thatcham and never seen one carried out with such ill grace by such an obviously annoyed TM.

So as we’re all digging into inside pockets and purses for the vital bits of paper, a lady comes walking up the aisle to get to a door ready to leave. She is no doubt absolutely kicking herself now by choosing to come this way as the TM blocked her and demanded her ticket as well.

Well you know what’s going to happen next don’t you. She only had a Reading travel card and Mr Charming decided that this was good enough to not only charge her for a ticket but to also slap on a penalty fare as well. £24 for Reading to Thatcham, a bargain of 10 miles in anyone’s book.

Now look, let me be very clear here. I’m no fan of fare dodgers and I have nothing against TM’s checking tickets or even the Revenue Protection goons which FGW position at the barriers every now and again – although why the pick the most miserable sour faced prunes for this job I don’t know why – but there is a thing called discretion and also a thing called manners and as it became clear from the lady’s story (her car had broken down and she’d found herself stranded in Reading) this was more of an oversight than a deliberate go at fare dodging. Yes, she should of course have bought a ticket, but instead of helping her on what had already been probably a very shitty day, or at least playing fair (fare – geddit!) with her by just charging for a single ticket, the TM was just on autopilot to make an example of the lady and raise some more profits for the FGW shareholders.

The stand off ended when the TM, who had now captured the lady’s travel card and refused to return it, barged past the rest of us who by now were queuing up to leave at Thatcham, yelling how he was “going to make a report” and how he had “every right to keep this travel card”.

Now I don’t know if the lady will make a complaint. I would guess not seeing as, at the end of the day, she was in the wrong and probably knows she’ll get no change out of the wonderful FGW 3 week turnaround complaints system, but I on the other hand certainly will be.

Because whether or not someone has paid or not, they deserve to be treated with dignity, politeness and fairness. Something the majority of the TMs do do, let me again be clear on that point, but for Patrick, (for that was his name) to be so obviously acting only according to his annoyed mood and desperate to “win” the stand off to act in this way was just not right.

Oh, and Patrick, in the unlikely event you read this……saying “madam” to someone does not equal politeness. I’m sure your mum would agree.

44074 – 06:57 Tuesday 6th May

44074

A lovely long sunny bank holiday might do wonders for the soul and for the niggling DIY jobs that have been put off for the last six months, but it doesn’t do so much for progress on the Carriage Capture. Nor does a duplicate carriage on Friday evening which meant it wasn’t until this morning with Carriage A on the 06:57 that I was able to get things going again with 44074 captured and safely put in the bag.

There was nothing to report on the journey apart from my neighbour’s thigh pressing into mine which wouldn’t be a problem apart from the fact that he had a beard and hissing headphones, but what is to report is the twitter spat I allowed myself to be foolishly dragged into yesterday evening. Perhaps it was watching Ronnie O’Sullivan allow the chance of a 6th World Title slip from his grasp that had made me so peevish or perhaps it was just spotting this self-pitying tweet from @FGW:

Don't you understand? It's not us, it's all your fault!

Now I know that the limit of 140 characters isn't exactly the ideal basis for getting across nuanced points but there really is a list of things that the FGW should never try to do on the medium of tweet (for details of this list please leave a comment on the blog) and unfortunately Grant’s no doubt well intentioned message here just came across as a pathetically winging comment that seems to suggest that any lack of improvement in the service is the passenger’s fault.

The fact is however that I have fedback service improvement suggestions to FGW on more than one occasion but have so far never received any sort of reply or acknowledgement from a manager with responsibilities in that particular area of the business. I have had recognition of receipt of my emails and I have had further discussion on these points with members of the communications team but as for having some sort of tip of the hat in my direction from someone from the upper echelons……..well as I say, their stove-pipe top hats are staying firmly attached to their heads.

Now the phrase “Service Improvement” is a curious one in itself because in the three years I’ve been a constant commuter, I have seen not one single improvement. That’s not to say of course there hasn’t been good service, there has been, plenty of it in fact but things don’t actually get any better. Service levels seem to be strangely circular with period of months with no issues whatsoever followed by a similar period where everything seems to fall apart at the seams. But none of this has anything to do with “service improvement”; there aren’t more trains, the fares haven’t gone down, there’s no new facilities, there’s no new choices. The standard of an average journey is the same as it was in, in my case anyway, 2011. Now I’m sure if FGW were directly challenged on this they would quote the new Reading Station or the plans for the roll out of WiFi (really? Wifi by 2014? That’s nothing to be proud of….) but all of this is either the work or investment of other partners or too little a lot lot lot too late. If I'm wrong here of course, let me know......tell me of the extra services, tell me of the new trains that run all night, explain how my season ticket also enables me to a free coffee, go into detail about the new seats with extra room, wax lyrical about the new ticket offices and their extended opening hours, sing from the rooftops about the additional work with your partners which has seen a decrease in the percentage of infrastructure failures........my ears, unlike the door to Marky Mark's inbox, always open.

Anyway to cut a long and drawn out twitter conversation short, what’s happened now is that I have emailed a couple of service improvement suggestions to Grant directly and he has promised to chase these up and ensure that I do get a response from someone appropriate. (Not that Grant himself has as yet acknowledged the mail yet, which is curious considering one of the points here is the subject of acknowledgement….) So the clock is ticking Grant and if anyone wants to follow my progress on this mission the hashtag you’ll need is #NotJasonNess

44079 – 06:57 Thursday 1st May

44079

BGC! BGC! BGC! We thought you’d gone and left us alone and adrift with no idea of what was going on with the Carriage Capture!

No, no, fans, friends and fudge-packers, no such luck, I am still here, live and kicking and continuing the pursue the greatest waste of time since Bobby Charlton found a comb and said, “hey, actually if I do it like this it looks like I've still got a full head of hair.”

So where was I for the last two days? Well luxuriating under the misnomer of “Working from Home” whilst the various factions on either side of the great Tube debate tried to trash out whether it’s a good idea to shut or the ticket offices or not.

Anyway, I was back in force today aboard 44079, Carriage A of the 06:57 into Paddington. Apparently yesterday all hell broke loose when there was a broken down train in the Bermuda Triangle of rail travel otherwise known as Maidenhead. So on the downside, had I been travelling yesterday I would have had something interesting to tell but I guess in the upside at least my journey today was undisturbed and on-time. So the blog’s loss is BGC’s gain. #winwin

42093 – 18:37 Monday 28th April

42093

Good old Sir Peter Parker, now pulling the Frome service (and carriage 44097), rumbled into Platform 7 at Reading dead on time and all that was left for me to do was clamber aboard Carriage C, or 42093 as his friends like to call him.

Other than a group of work colleagues, obviously off on a course (possibly at the Scottish and Southern Electric centre) who thought it was hilarious to be getting off at Thatcham (eh?) I could have done this journey in my sleep. Perhaps I did?

42344 – 18:37 Friday 25rd April

42344

The 18:37 Frome service was quite a let down after the excitement of the train that got me to Reading.

A half empty and fairly quiet Carriage C saw me home to the start of the weekend and two days where the readers of this blog won’t have to read any pointless drivel-ridden updates. Well you wouldn't want too much of a good thing would you?

Join us again next week for some more carriages, some more unreasonable interaction with fellow humans and more appalling grammar.

44097 – 17:45 Wednesday 23nd April

44097

I managed to reach Paddington a couple of minutes earlier this evening and those vital minutes proved very important as it meant I managed to jump on the 17:45 service to Swansea a mere matter of minutes before it left.

I couldn't help myself but be drawn to Carriage A which turned out OK as these early stages on in the Carriage Capture quest still means I am hitting new carriages rather than any I have already previously visited. Tonight’s lucky winner was 44097 and my luck was still in as I captured the last vacant double seat even though it was one half of a table combination.

I normally avoid the table like the plague as firstly there’s not enough leg room for even the smallest Oompa-Loompa and secondly you’re running a very high risk that some annoying tap-tap-tapper is going to get their laptop out and start doing something vitally important like dashing off some emails or maybe even write a stupid blog. On this occasion though the lure of the spare seat was too much and at least to the relief of both my opposing neighbour and me we could sit diagonally from each other and stretch our legs out.

The journey proceeded fairly normally apart from the rather disconcerting situation that developed between myself and some stranger down the end of the carriage. Every time I looked up from my book (propped on the handy table) this bloke was looking at me and grinning. I tried some surprise glances but no, still every time I looked in his direction he was staring back with this big shit eating grin on his face. I started to get quite nervous and pretended to look out the windows and at the luggage rack to try to see if out the corner of my eye he altered his eye line but he was obviously finding my visage far too amusing. I did notice as I gingerly made my way past him to alight at Reading that he was wearing headphones so it’s perfectly plausible that he might have been listening to some hilarious comedy and just looking into the middle distance. Or perhaps he was just laughing at me. Yeah, it was probably that.

44022 – 06:57 Wednesday 23rd April

44022

First Great Western isn’t giving me much material to work with here. For at least the past 2-3 weeks all my trains have been running on time (give or take the odd minute or two) and I haven’t experienced a dreaded cancellation for quite a while.

Even my travelling companions are behaving themselves, well as much as a carriage full of shaved chimps can do anyway. Today’s victim kept himself to himself and apart from the tinny hiss of his headphones he slept the whole way into London, the only noise being a surprised grunt when he was woken for a ticket check.
The only other disturbance was someone kicking off when they were kicked off (see what I did there?) at Reading after they’d got caught using an off-peak ticket. “But it was the one they sold me at the office mate” wailed the unfortunate fare dodger, although he soon ditched the blame-it-on-the-ticket-office routine and settled instead for the tried and tested effing-and-jeffing-swearing-his-head off methodology.

This punctual commuting is all very well, but it’s not very amusing. I had to relieve the boredom this morning with this pithy comment on the state of Thatcham Station from @3rdRateWestern

It must have been my new aftershave. HA!

42283 – 18:37 Tuesday 22nd April

After a short stand on Platform 7 – new benches have been installed but no-one is allowed to sit down yet – and watching some geezer do an Ivor the Engine impression with an e-Cigarette, I boarded the “Prince Michael of Kent” who was personally pulling the Frome service this evening. Good on you Mike but you were still 5 minutes late into Thatcham.

Carriage B was nice and empty and I didn’t have to employ any dirty seat grabbing tactics to secure a double berth for the short journey.

Nothing else happened on this journey. Sorry, I can’t even make something up……………have some extra photos instead.
<Gandalf> You Shall Not Sit! </Gandalf>

Prince Michael of Kent taking a breather at Thatcham. I bet the real one has never done that.
